An Introduction to "The Turn-a-Round Circle Time Programme" - Level 1 "Building socially and emotionally intelligent young people"

Would you like to implement a programme that supports the goals of SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning), Every Child Matters, Healthy Schools, PHSE and the Primary National Strategy? If your answer is YES, then this programme is for you.

Level 1 introduces the "Turn-a-Round Circle Time Programme" and takes place over two days. Day 1 takes place on an ordinary working day and day 2 is an INSET day.

The Turn a Round programme is a whole school approach, which provides for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of it's pupils, by developing a caring ethos, teaching by example, encouraging democratic values, pro-social behaviour and self discipline. It is a chance for schools to invite all their staff and the wider school community to an inspiring day.

Day 1 - Circle Time in Action Day – Pupils and Teachers Together on Emotional Literacy

A great day without having to close the school. We come into your school during an ordinary day and work with children staff in the classrooms and playground.

On this day we will:

• Demonstrate Circle Time in two classes of your choice and all members of staff can be invited to observe.
• Debrief with you after each Circle Time demonstration.
• Observe the children and playground at lunchtime and run a “Positive Playtimes” Programme with the lunchtime superisors, head teacher, senior management and teaching assistants.
•Feedback all the ideas from both children and staff to an end of day staff meeting. Or, even better have a follow on PD Day. These ideas can be used to choose the way forward to a more positive and supportive school.

On Day 2 - Level 1 of “The Turn a Round Programme”, you will learn:

• About the neuroscience of emotion and brain development
• What emotionally literacy is and how to implement a whole school approach.
• How to run well well-structured Circle Time sessions using the Circle Time unique 6 step process.
• To review your current listening systems, rules, rewards, consequences, lunchtime and “children at risk” policies.
• How to enhance the emotional literacy, self-esteem, morale, resiliency and wellbeing of adults and children.
• How to integrate the aims of SEAL, Healthy school, Every Child Matters and the Primary National Strategy into a whole school approach or if you live in NZ link the programme to New Zealand's National Curriculum, Key Competencies and Values Curriculum.
• To combat bullying or aggressive behaviour through a whole school approach.
• How to boost and maintain staff energy levels.
• To create an environment of trust that accelerates the development of others so they can more effectively contribute to organisational goals
• Draw all the adults together towards a shared vision of a happy and respectful team and learning environment.

"The Turn-a-Round Circle Time Programme" - Level 2

"Building socially and emotionally intelligent young people".

This day is suitable for those who have acquired the necessary skills and introduced some circle time strategies but now want to build on these.

On Level 2 of “The Turn a Round Programme”, you will learn:

• More exciting games and creative ideas
• To support the further development of children’s social skills, imagination and emotional literacy.
• A variety of strategies for dealing with bullying, challenging, vulnerable and unhappy children who often challenge us at fundamental levels. Including use of the therapeutic arts to help children think about and symbolise their feelings rather than discharging or defending them.
• To use communication skills that develop problem solving and self-reliance
• To develop an adult Coaching Circle
• To apply a coaching process that results in clear agreements and initiates action

Positive Playtimes Programme
A whole school approach

If a child is unhappy at lunchtime – they are unhappy at school.

This day will:

• Help the whole school promote a positive lunchtime and playtime policy.
• Re-energise and make playtime more positive through creative play.
• Establish or re–energise the Buddy System.
• Create Zoned Activity Areas.
• Improve Wet Play.

Our programme will inspire you to explore strategies the whole school can take ownership of and encourage both the adults and children to engage in creative play

Stepping Stones to Circle Time - An Early Years Programme.

The Circle Time Programme makes each early year’s child feel special.

On this day you will get new ideas to:

• Promote children’s personal and social growth.

• Support parents in supporting their children

These fabulous techniques will re-energise and re-inspire you and your early year’s team.

Wellbeing For You

A Whole School Approach to Staff Wellbeing

This is not an indulgence. It is a necessity! The welfare of your team is paramount to your children's and your staff's success.

Health and wellbeing problems are prevalent in the education workforce today, and they are having a costly impact on teacher performance and pupil attainment.

In a November 2008 Teacher Support Network survey, 87 per cent of teachers who responded said they had experienced stress during the last two years. Two-thirds said they had experienced anxiety and 42 per cent had suffered from depression in the same period. 63 per cent said their work performance had suffered as a result. An independent study by Birkbeck College in 2007 also found a direct link between teacher wellbeing and pupil attainment

A report last year by the London School of Economics (LSE) found that the education sector is one of the worst performing sectors for sickness absence in the UK.

Did you also know the Teachers' Pay and Conditions document includes requirements that all teachers should enjoy reasonable work/life balance?

This workshop will explore ways to enhance the quality and balance of your personal and professional life and give you ideas to develop a whole school climate of positive relationships and staff wellbeing.

On this day you will:

• Complete a wellbeing audit, to discover the gaps between where you are now and where you would like to be in the future.
• Learn self-care strategies to keep you and your team energised throughout the week.
• Discover what is draining your energy and keeping you from being the wonderful person that you are.
• Identify and evaluate your own energy levels and create clear, self care action plans that work for you
• Gain ideas about how to look after yourself and develop trust and respect with all staff.
• Learn communication and coaching skills that ensure positive relationships for all.
• Learn strategies to deal with those who challenge us at a fundamental level.

Coaching and Mentoring

Today's schools feature fewer management layers and emphasise individual responsibility. Successful delegation and empowerment relies on effective coaching. This Coaching & Mentoring training course focuses on the methods by which managers develop the performance of individuals in their team. This coaching training course can complement online learning programs that use broadband to provide audio and video resources. It looks at two main types of coaching, providing opportunities for managers to apply these skills.

Coaching & Mentoring training course objectives:

• Coaching to build a positive supportive relationship with team members
• Coaching to help people accept, adjust to change
• The key coaching styles
• The coaching process and skills
• Assistance in preparing and plan for a coaching sessions/circle time sessions
• The role of the mentor and mentoring programmes.

One-to-One Coaching that Ensures Sustainability of Training

We now provide 2 x follow on tele coaching sessions with every day of training. Our experience of trialling this option this year has been so successful that we now add these 2 sessions to every training day we run.

Learning new skills requires time and practice to achieve proficiency. Implementing a new school system such as “The Turn a Round Programme” and successfully leading this project is no different. Working one-to-one with a professional coach/ tele trainer has been proven to be the most effective way to apply new skills on the job, quickly and productively.

The Success Partnership's one-to-one tele coaching/training reinforces the principles and skills learned on your training days

One-to-one coaching helps people take what they have learned, practice it, apply it, and act on it. While coaching sessions are tailored to the unique needs of each person and school, TSP coaches are trained in the principles of "The Turn a Round Programme" and can help participants apply the skills they have learnt to real life school situations. Your Coach will tailor the learning experience to the schools and Leaders needs. Together they set goals, create action plans, and practice new skills.

Learning, productivity, and morale improve when training is combined with coaching. Well-known research by Manchester Consulting shows that coaching dramatically improves working relationships between managers and their respective teams, demonstrating a 5:1 return on investment.

Dynamic Communication Seminar

(This is a 4-6 hour informative and synergistic workshop based on the behavioral-based DISC model. The seminar is a powerful process for leadership teams, as well as senior management.)

Dynamic Communication was designed to help people win, and to achieve a greater degree of success in life and work. Achievers throughout history have had one thing in common – they know themselves. They know their own limitations and, by realising their weaknesses, are able to develop plans to overcome their shortcomings and take advantage of their strengths.

Achievers also know that succeeding means gaining the cooperation of others. This requires an ability to communicate with a wide variety of people. Through this seminar you can learn to communicate with key people in a more meaningful way creating a greater number of win-win situations.

The seminar is conducted in two steps and works at two levels for your employees.

Step One: Each employee completes a Behavioural Assessment (DISC), which generates a report. A Success Partnership analyst then goes through the report with the employee providing them with a full understanding of their own style of behaviour and communication.

Step Two: All employees attend a half-day seminar where the team come together to learn how to communicate effectively with others. Through an awareness of self comes an appreciation of others.

Topics in the course include:
• The benefits of applying a communication model.
• Understanding your own communication style.
• Recognising and appreciating other’s styles.
• Adapting for enhanced communication and relationships.
• Actions, commitments and keys to success.

As a result of this process employees gain an insight into themselves and others they work with. This in turn creates an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding to reduce communication barriers and increase team dynamics in the workplace.
