PURPOSE
To develop the essential knowledge and skills to deliver The Turn a Round Circle Time training programme to your schools and cluster.

OUTCOMES

By completing “The Turn a Round Programme”, you will learn:

• About the neuroscience of emotion and brain development
• What an emotionally literate school is and what makes emotionally literate children and adults.
• How to develop Emotionally Intelligence, Emotional Literacy and Social Intelligence personally, professionally and with your children and school.
• How to run well well-structured Circle Time sessions using the Circle Time unique 6 step process.
• How to enhance the resiliency, confidence and self-esteem and wellbeing of adults and children.
• How to develop conflict resolution and restorative practises in school
• To review your current listening systems, rules, rewards, consequences, lunchtime and “children in crisis” policies.
• How the Turn a Round programme integrates with the Curriculum's values and key competencies.
• How bullying and aggressive behaviour can be minimised through a whole school emotional literacy approach.
• A variety strategies for dealing with challenging, vulnerable and unhappy children who often challenge us at fundamental levels. Including use of the therapeutic arts to help children think about and symbolise their feelings rather than discharging or defending them.
• Create an environment of trust that accelerates the development of others so they can more effectively contribute to organisational goals
• Apply a coaching process that results in clear agreements and initiates action
• Use communication skills that develop self-reliance in others
• Draw all the adults together towards a shared vision of a happy and respectful team and learning environment.

THE PROGRAMME

Day 1 – 9.00 – 4pm

In the morning we will:

• Clarify expectations of our course and outcomes
• Observe a Circle Time demonstration with an Infant class.
• Debrief with you after the Circle Time demonstration
• Establish how to run an effective Circle Time meeting, and why we use circle time schools.


In the afternoon

• Learn about the neuroscience of emotion and brain development
• Learn what an emotionally literate school is and what makes emotionally literate children and adults.
• Learn about the psychology of circle time and linking it to the National Curriculum/ National Strategy.
• Learn our Top tips for developing Circle Time in your classroom


Day 2 – 9.00 – 4.00pm

In the morning

• Circle Time demonstration with a Junior class and Lead Teachers observe
• Debrief after the Circle Time demonstration
• Learn how to enhance the resiliency, wellbeing and self esteem of adults and children.
• Learn how values enhance children’s love of learning
• Learn how incentive and consequence systems create a happier and more harmonious school
• Learn how the power of praise and gratitude enhances learning and engagement.

In the afternoon: Powerfully Positive Playtimes
If a child is unhappy at lunchtime – they are unhappy at school.

• Help the whole school promote a positive lunchtime and playtime policy.
• Re-energise and make playtime more positive through creative play.
• Establish or re–energise the Playground Activity Leaders System.
• Create Zoned Activity Areas.
• Improve wet playtimes

Day 3 – 9.00 – 4.00pm

Develop your leadership skills using the EduCoach programme

You will learn to:

• Discover coaching as a powerful management and leadership model
• Learn experience and practise “state of the art” coaching techniques
• Run circle times with whole staff using a coaching methodology
• Manage challenging staff situations using the EduCoach and Circle Time Programme.

Day 4 – 9.00 – 4.00
Work life balance – Staff Wellbeing/Hauora

The welfare of your team is paramount to your children’s and your school’s success.

• Learn self-care strategies to keep you and your team energised throughout the term.
• Identify and evaluate your own energy levels and create clear, self care action plans that work for you
• Gain ideas about how to look after yourself and develop trust and respect with all staff.
• Learn strategies to deal with children and adults who challenge us at a fundamental level.
• Action planning for 2009
